2 failed lumpectomy’s now mastectomy

So 2 lumpectomy’s and full ancillary on first surgery. Now still no clear margins. He could have done another lumpectomy but I said no just do mastectomy. I can’t have reconstruction for a year which is so upsetting. As I need radiotherapy on top as was in 1/15 lymph node. Hate the thought of no breast for a year as I’m a DD so will look so odd. My surgery is 14th Feb lovely valentines present :(.  Got 2 weddings this year. And holiday in April. Hoping I can get it done quicker then a year

  • Hi Kirstymarie,

I am so sorry to hear that your surgeon didn't achieve clear margins on the second attempt. The prosthesis you are given following surgery is made of silicone and these come in all sizes, so there shouldn't be any bother matching this up to your remaining breast. They are also reasonably heavy, so look fairly realistic when covered with clothing.

I had a lumpectomy first of all, followed by a double mastectomy the following year. I was a 44C prior to surgery and despite being told that the prostheses are getting lighter every year, I find the pair very heavy. I have resorted to wearing M&S foam breast forms, which are lightweight and more comfortable, although I still wear the silicone ones when I want to dress up.

I hope that the mastectomy goes well on Valentine's Day. I doubt that you'll get your reconstruction for at least a year, unless you are very lucky., as some people here have been waiting 2-3 years for this.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
