External beam radiation

Hi I have been diagnosed with localised prostate cancer. PSA 7.2 Gleason 3+4. Treatment is going to be external beam radiation. Was told I need 10 doses but am have 5 at double strength. I’ve had metal fiducial markers injected into the prostate to guide the beam, along with a spacer to keep the prostate away from nearby tissues. Anyone had this treatment.

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Maltaman although I'm sorry to hear you've been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Hopefully some of our members who have had this treatment will be along soon to share their experiences and advice but you may also be able to get more insight into this treatment from the online community at Prostate Cancer UK.

I hope the information one of our nurses gave you about external beam radiation has been useful but if you have any other questions playing on your mind, or would just like to talk this through with someone, then don't hesitate to give them a call on 0808 800 4040.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Maltaman,

I am no Doctor but that external beam radiation might be a good option.

The doctors will advice you better. You can pay for a consultation and seek a 2nd opinion if you want.

    No treatment is perfect.

With surgery you will 100 percent have dry ejaculation for the rest of your natural life.

  • Thanks, I went with the idea of prostate removal, as it’s localised that would mean cancer out. But it was explained that this radiation treatment mirrors the same results with possibly less side effects.

  • Hi Maltaman,

I went with prostate removal as well, I am 3 months’ post operation and recovering.

My PSA was high, now a few months after surgery is < 0.1, which is a good thing.

However, advice I would give myself If I knew what I know now:

    1. Take the wifey on a second honey moon/romantic getaway before my operation and give her a time she would never forget.

    2. Get fit in the gym months before operation/kegel exercises/core exercises

    3. Begin taking low dose of Cialis months before and leading up to operation

    4. Last but not lease if you forget anyone of these don’t forget  number 1 advice
