Bladder cancer - BCG - Urine stopped

Hello there,

A close relative had his fifth BCG three weeks ago. Male 74 years.

Range of complications from the BCG had been suffered. Yesterday new complication - Urine has completely stopped.

He has admitted to Emergency and the doctor have used Catherer to drain and waiting more information on next steps.

I was wondering if anybody had any similar episodes in the past?

  • Hi,

Now I have a better understanding of the problem:

The BCG administered around three weeks ago (his fifth round) has caused frequent urination - every 10-15 minutes and it became unbearable even after several days. So the doctors gave him a medication (don't know the name) to control the frequent urination, which in itself caused its own side effect. Yesterday morning, the urine was blocked and they have inserted a Urethra Catherer for the urine to be collected in a bag and have it reviewed.

This seems to be one problem after the next - have you experienced anything like this before?

  • I'm sorry to hear of the problems your close relative has been experiencing since having his 5th BCG treatment.

Hopefully some of our members who have may experienced this issue during their treatment will be along soon to share their experiences and advice but in the meantime, if you or your relative would like to discuss this with one of our cancer nurses, you can contact them on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they'll do all they can to help.

Fingers crossed the catheter will start to make things a lot easier for your relative and the rest of his BCG treatment is trouble free.

    Kind regards,
