Hi having a colonoscopy is absolutely fine ,you might read lots of horror stories but mainly its not like that ,I had sedation and to be fair it seemed like it was over in seconds and the staff will talk you through it every step of the way ,as far as weight loss and symptoms go they could be down to so many other things rather than cancer ,I also had weight loss and many more symptoms and thought the worse but it turned out to be nothing serious you are doing the right thing by getting checked out ,let us know how you get on .
I don't think anybody will be able to tell you what could be causing your symptoms. It could be many things. My mother had weight loss and loss of appetite as an effect of having covid. In her case, that lasted about 4 months, I think, but something like that is a possibility as are things like IBD, stress, etc.
The odds are probably against it being cancer at all.
I had a fit stool test and it came back positive for blood and I did a stupid thing and looked up what the accuracy of it was and it’s around 80% for cancer. I really hope you’re right as I’ve been having a panic attack for the last 12 hours.
If you hadn't tested positive on a fit test you wouldn't be having a Colonoscopy ,that's the usual reason and as far as I know we all tested positive but it still doesn't mean its cancer ,its much more likely not to be no matter what your symptoms are .
I'm guessing you got a result over 400? I know there is one website that says the chances of cancer with a result over 400 is 80% and it comes up right at the top of the page when you google. But if you scroll down a bit, you will get to another result that says 22.8%. And yet another says 50% chance of serious pathology, which I assume means cancer or polyps or IBD or diverticulitis.
So I'm guessing that one that says 80% is a mistake of some kind.
I’m going to be happy if it’s crohns, colitis or anything other then cancer. I’m kicking myself as over the last year I’ve been getting these symptoms but putting it down to at the beginning food poisoning and covid and I’m worried that the pain meds I’m on has been masking other symptoms like abdo pain etc. so far this year I’ve been diagnosed with autism and osteoarthritis in both my hips (already got it in my knees)
I’ve also had IBS for years and when it first started I had blood so whenever I’ve had blood since I’ve ignored it and I’ve had no blood showing at all when I did the fit test
all the doctors keep saying to me is I’m too young (41) for this and too young for that when I got to see them. I even told them about my weight loss prior to all of this as well.
If your doctors are saying you are too young (I assume saying they don't think it is likely to be cancer), I'd find that very reassuring. Especially if you have told them all your symptoms and they feel that does not indicate you are likely to have cancer. They are definitely far more likely to be reliable than anything you read online as they know your individual circumstances, whereas the stats online are taking everybody into account and even the more accurate ones (and I suspect those are the lower one) are out of everybody tested for cancer and some might be at far higher risk than you are.
I was a bit younger than you (a couple of months before my 41st birthday!) when I experienced rectal bleeding, weight loss, trapped wind and occasional loose stools (I didn't lack appetite or have a positive FIT test, but I didn't get a FIT test because I'm in Ireland and those flippin' hackers had just hacked our HSE and I think the test I had wasn't as sensitive). The doctor said that at my age and with those symptoms, I would be "the unluckiest person in the world" if it turned out to be cancer and that while it was possible, the odds were less than 1%.
I know your symptoms are different than mine, but from what you are saying about your doctors' reaction, it sounds like cancer is pretty unlikely in your case too. If more than one doctor thinks it's probably not, well...there's a good chance they are right.
I know this isn't much reassurance because it's hard to avoid thinking, "well, somebody will be that 1% and of course, the doctors will have told them it's unlikely too.
Because I forgot to mention it, in my case, the result turned out to be exactly what we all expected - piles, probably combined with the effects of my thyroid medication and probably the stress of the whole situation. That is something to take into account too, that stress can exacerbate bowel symptoms.
