Perforated tumour after chemo

Hello
Would anyone have experience of a tumour which then perforated due to chemo?  My brother in law has stage 4 rectal cancer and was advised by the oncologists that the chemo “almost worked too well” and caused a perforation in the tumour which then caused a leakage.  The leakage is currently causing an infection and he is in hospital at the minute on IV antibiotics.  Has anyone ever heard of this happening – the perforation ?  His chemo has currently stopped until they get the infection under control.  Thanks in anticipation.
  • Hello CHUGH041

I'm sorry to hear about your brother-in-law's diagnosis and that his treatment has caused some further complications. Hopefully the hospital will be able to get on top of this infection soon and then the specialist team can review his care.

I can see that you also posted in our Ask the Nurses topic area and that Nurse Sarah has replied to explain that sometimes a perforation can happen with bowel cancer. I'm unsure if we've any members here who have experience with this problem but you might be able to chat with others who do at the Bowel Cancer UK community.

I hope that your brother-in-law has some positive news soon.

    Best wishes,
