Outdoor workers and skin cancer

Hello,

My name is Sabah. I currently work in the health care industry.

My partner is an outdoor worker and spends 5 days a week in direct contact with the sun for up to 8 hours.

Naturally, skin cancer is a worry and we try and be as vigilant as we can when it comes to monitoring new and old freckles etc.

It really got me thinking just how many outdoor workers there are in this country ranging from builders to fruit pickers and just how a good proportion of them are male.

Looking into it more, I saw a statistic where skin cancer has significantly risen from a few years ago and how a good amount of skin cancer sufferers are male.

The reason I am posting today is because I would be so grateful if there are outdoor workers or families of outdoor workers who could share their story.

I want to know more about this as I believe more can be done to protect outdoor workers from the disease.

Prevention is better than cure.

So please, if there are any outdoor workers or again families of outdoor workers who have skin cancer and can share their story in hopes of creating a change.

Thank you for your time,

Sabah

  • Hello Sabah

Thanks for posting this interesting question in the forum. Sun safety is an important topic and for people who, like your partner, spend a lot of their working lives outside, being sun-safe and monitoring any skin changes is key.

We do have some information on our website about sun safety that may be of help. There is also some information available on the NHS website.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Sabah,

There is a melanoma charity called SKCIN who, amongst other prevention education, do a lot of work with outdoor workers. There is also a lot of prevention work being undertaken with sports people and outdoor leisure lovers by a melanoma charity called Melanoma-Fund. Check out their websites and I hope they help,
