LGBTQ+ Relationships during chemo treatment

Hello, I’m about to start chemotherapy and my partner and I have some queries about the risks (mainly to my partner’s health) of sexual activity as a lesbian couple. I’ve found a lot of generic male/female information online, but we’d love to hear from other couples within the LGBTQ+ community who have been through this and could share some insight into precautions they’ve taken, things that have helped or what to avoid etc.

Thanks in advance :)

  • Hello Atq1988,

I wanted to wish you the best of luck for the start of your chemotherapy treatment. I hope it all goes well for you and wanted to share with you our general information on chemotherapy which includes a section on sex and chemotherapy and in particular I would like to draw your attention to the About sex and chemotherapy section which has a paragraph on protecting your partner. Make sure you talk to your doctor or cancer nurse before your treatment starts, if you're worried about the effects chemotherapy might have on your sex life and to get the best possible advice - they will have a lot of knowledge on this subject and will be used to sharing their insights on this. Our nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 if you would like to talk things through with them - you can call them Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

Obviously nothing replaces hearing from personal stories and I will now let other members within the LGBTQ+ community tell you more about what worked for them and I hope they will have some good tips for you and your partner.

Everything crossed for your treatment - sending you positive vibes that it all goes well with minimal side effects.

    Best wishes,

    Lucie, Cancer Chat Moderator
