Ct scan shows Secondary breast cancer

About 4 years ago i had primary breast cancer which after a year i was given the all clear. From December I have had a persistant cough. I feel like it has got better though wasn't as bad as it had been when I had it in December.

But it never went away and 6 months later did the dr refer me for an x ray- wish I pushed for this sooner

From the x ray I was sent for a CT and that's when my world came crashing down. The very next day I recieved 3 missed calls from the hospital, and a call from the Gp. I went to see my gp face to face who said the CT scan shows loads of dots on my lungs and possibly my back. He said it's more than likely cancer. I've got a call with the oncologist on Tuesday and the dr said I will likely have a biopsy to conform

I'm I'm scared and holding onto the hope that the biopsy doesn't show cancer- has anyone had this where the ct scan the Dr's suspected cancer but the biopsy showed it didn't? Or am I holding onto false hope here?

I want to be hopeful but also mentally prepared.

  • Hi Tbeeno,

Hopefully others will reply but I just wanted to reach out to you, you must be so anxious right now. I would say that a biopsy is the only way to confirm if it is cancer but doctors do know what it looks like on a scan. If it's confirmed as secondary breast cancer, the treatment is so good now, it can give you many more years ahead so hold that thought. I've had primary breast cancer and was terrified but having read the stories of so many on hear, it's not nearly as scary. We are here for you.

    Big hugs

  • Hi Tbeeno

I realise this is worrying time for you.  Hope for the best but prepare for the worst is all any of us can do in situations like yours.  I don't know much about secondary breast cancer but if it is that, talk through options like immunotherapy and get more than just one opinion as oncologists can have differing views on how to treat cancers.

Of course your scared and who wouldn't be?

I have my fingers crossed that all goes well for you and maybe someone with experience here on this matter may respond soon.

    Take care xx

    Hi Tbeeno,

A very warm welcome to our forum, although I'm so sorry to hear why you are here.

I have had 2 bouts of primary breast cancer, but my mum had secondary breast cancer. In her case it had spread to her brain, bone, liver and lungs, so I have some idea of how you are feeling. The CT scan will show  up these dots on your lungs and possibly your back, but the doctors cannot be certain that this is cancer, until they get the results of a biopsy. Having said this, cancer doctors see so many cases of this, that they don't often make a mistake about what they see on a scan.

I note that you are speaking with your oncologist tomorrow and I hope that s/he can give you more information then. You are probably best to be prepared for the worst, but hope for the best.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. Remember that we are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi, I am sorry to read your comment it must be a worrying time.

Do you mind me asking if the X-rays you had showed anything, I would guess it might be yes as they proceeded to a CT scan.  The reason I ask is that my wife who had breast cancer in 2015 then endometrial cancer in Dec 2022, has had a cough since November, the Gp tried antibiotics but no joy, then two X-rays first if which showed and infection second reported clear lungs.  However that was several weeks ago, I have been pushing for a CT scan as I know this is a better medium to create a better image. At last this is being done at 8.20 tomorrow morning, yes NHS are doing this in a BH.  I am scared witless.

    thanks for reading
