Muscular Pain

I have just finished treatment for breast cancer. I had 14 rounds of chemotherapy, a single mastectomy and 20 rounds of radiotherapy. Finished radiotherapy five weeks ago. All of the treatments went well but I am finding that I seem to have some side effects from the treatment. I lost all my hair during treatment but it has started to come back. However my eyelashes seem to be gone again, I have some issues with my toenails and just this past week I have been having some muscular pain. I'm also still very tired. Has anyone else experienced this. I'm most concerned about the muscle pain and not sure who to talk to about it.

  • Hello LyndaP

I'm sorry to hear that you're struggling with some pain over the past week. It's understandable that you're feeling concerned.

Your body has been through so much over the past few months and even though your radiotherapy ended five weeks ago, it's common for side effects to continue for quite a few weeks afterward.

You don't mention in your post if you're taking any hormonal medications such as tamoxifen or letrozole/anastrazole. These can sometimes cause aches and pains and I know that many women have posted here on the forum about the side effects that these medications have caused for them.

I certainly think it's worth having a chat with your breast care nurse for some advice and reassurance. Alternatively, you're most welcome to call our team of nurses who I know will be happy to listen and offer any support they can. If you'd like to talk with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

I do hope things begin to settle and improve for you soon Lynda.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Jenn

Thank you for your reply. No I am not taking any medication at the moment. I had triple negative breast cancer so I have been told that there is no follow on medication for this. I had a very good pathology report after mastectomy - no evidence of any disease remaining. I have an appoint with my practice nurse today for my usual B12 injection. I am taking some ibuprofen which is helping and I feel a bit better today. I will ask the nurse if it might be worthwhile booking a GP appointment. I also have a follow up appointment in just over two weeks time with the Radiotherapy Oncologist. I am having a break abroad for the weekend in two weeks time which I have been looking forward to. I think I have been holding a lot of tension in my body. I had a follow up CT scan last week to check some nodules on my lung which showed up during the staging scans. I was very anxious about the results but I saw the Oncologist this week and as there was no change he is fairly sure that they are ok but we will follow up in six months.
