HER 2 breast cancer

I had a lumpectomy a year half ago for breast cancer.
My cancer was aggressive and hormonal based.

At first I was in shock about being told I had cancer so I never spoke up about the lumpectomy and how I would of preferred my breast off at the start.
A year and half on and I want my breast off still so I can move forward. When I check myself it's that disfigured inside my mind is working overtime because there's lumps all over. I had s meeting with my Surgeon and McMillan to ask about it being removed, they said I needed to speak to a Pychologist first then it will go to a meeting to see if they will do it.
Anyone else felt the same has me.
Thank you

  • Hello hqx16n

I'm sorry to hear that you're struggling at the moment. It's good to know that you've already spoken with the surgeon and nurse.

I know that in some hospital trusts across the country, it's standard practice for people to talk to a psychologist and for the request to then go before an MDT when asking for a non-cancerous breast to be removed. Try not to worry too much about this.

I'd suggest writing down a list of all the reasons that you feel this would be your preferred outcome so that when you attend the appointment with the psychologist you don't miss anything important that you may want to say.

I'm unsure from your post if you're planning to remain flat on that side or will look to have a reconstruction at some point. If you'd planning to remain flat then I'd recommend getting in touch with an organisation called Flat Friends. They have a fantastic support group for women who have had a single/double mastectomy without reconstruction and I'm sure some of their members will be happy to share their experiences of going through this process.

If you want to chat things through with one of our nurses at any point you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

I hope that you don't have to wait too long for your appointments and that you're able to achieve the outcome you want to help you move forwards.

    Best wishes,
