Post op results update

Morning all

I received my results yesterday. Not the news I was hoping for...further surgery, as margins not clear.

I am disappointed but woke this morning thinking I can't change it and they have to be sure they have got it all. I am booked in next week for the op, so nice and quick.

The good news from the appointment that the lymph nodes taken were clear.
My diagnosis pre op was 97mm of DCIS, however they have found 4mm mucinous carcinoma. I believe this is a rarer form of BC?

I am not going to lie that I feel like I have a million questions. My results were given by a different consultant, as mine was covering the doctors strikes and I didn't take to her. She was quite dismissive and made me feel like an inconvenience

sorry to hear this however it's good news your back to get this done quickly

I understand about new consultants it's not a nice experience as you have faith in your own and when they are like that you feel like a ( extra ) hopefully you will see your own consultant after your post op this time to settle you again .

  • Morning Lara

Yes she definitely made me feel like an extra! I thought it was just me being sensitive but my sister in law came with me and she is a McMillan palliative nurse and said she was shocked by how the results were given. Now don't get me wrong the results remain the same but know my consultant would have delivered them differently and reassured me and made sure I didn't leave without any questions. The consultant yesterday couldn't wait to get out of the room.

I am confused by what she said. She opened the conversation by saying all the cancer has been removed and my lymph nodes were clear. I thought brilliant!! But followed that by the margins were not clear on one side so further op. My question is did they just not get enough healthy tissue or was there cancer in the margins. Or are the two the same thing?! I think I am going to ring the BCN and see if they can answer my questions and if not whether I would be able to have a telephone conversation with my consultant before my next op to put my mind at rest.

With regards to hormone tablets, I am not sure as I still haven't received a full treatment plan with the set back yesterday. In the consultants letter it states IHC was performed on invasive tumour ER 7 and PR 6 and HERS: 1+negative. I can only presume tablets will follow at the end of this. I know she did throw in a comment about radiotherapy but that had already been mentioned by my consultant when I elected a lumpectomy rather that a mastectomy.

  • Bless you, sorry to hear your experience with this consultant wasn't so good and left you with questions. Hopefully your BCN will be able to answer them. Also good that you don't have to wait long before you have your next surgery.
I had my wide local excision 5 weeks ago and sentinel node biopsy. I get my results on Monday.
I'm ER 8 and have been told I will have hormone tablets after all my treatments, to reduce my oestrogen

I'm awaiting my HER2 results, as well as my operation results, to see if I also need Herceptin and chemotherapy.
I've also been told I will have radiotherapy.

let's hope we both get good results from next week.
It certainly is a rollercoaster of emotions.

  • Hi PJ

Thank you for your reply and well wishes. It sure is a rollercoaster and I am trying hard to see the further surgery as a bump in road!

I am sorry to hear of your diagnosis and I wish you all the best for your results on Monday.

I have contacted the BCN today and she has answered all my questions so feel much better. She has explained about the margins and said they are described as 3 types: clear, positive and close. Mine on one side were close...all cancer has been removed but the margin of healthy tissue is not big enough so back under the knife for a slice of healthy tissue!

I have learnt so much in this short journey so far! Including some new terminology

How did you find your recovery from your op? You seem to have had a long excruciating wait for your results?

  • Thanks for your well wishes. I'm so glad you're feeling better after talking to your BCN. They are amazing aren't they.
Definitely good to think of it as a bump in the road

All the best next week for good clear margins xx
