Any tips for the day if surgery?

Hello all,

I am looking for some advice on what to wear and take to hospital when I have my lumpectomy. I am going in early to have dye put into my breast as I will have sentinel lymph nodes removed so it could be a very long day depending on where I am on the list.

Anything you found helpful or wished in hindsight you had taken in with you, I am just a day case but not looking forward to it as being in hospital makes the diagnosis more real if you know what I mean.

thanks in advance

Monika

  • Monica

good luck for your lumpectomy I had this in July 22

the operation is very straightforward I was out shopping 2 days later .

I took a pair of pjs with button opening to front to save pulling a top on and off magazines treats water

    I wish you the best

anything you need to chat about I'm here

  • Hi l used to work in day surgery, l would advise you to take plenty to read, or crosswords ect, dressing gown and slippers.  Glasses case if you wear glasses, a comfortable bra for post op. Make sure you have some painkillers at home in case you need them. Your phone as you can text your family to say what's happening and when they can collect you. Ther will be others to chat to and probably a tv that helps to pass the time
You will have something to eat and drink before you leave. I hope you are early on the list and all goes well

  • Hi Susie

glasses case is a great tip that I wouldn't have thought of and is relevant for me. I have bought a seamless bra with a zip front (very attractive ). I hadn't even thought about other people being there which shows how insular I have become when thinking about my cancer so that was a great reminder that there are many of us and I am not alone. I met a student nurse at my pre op assessment who is going to be in day care on Monday when I am there which is nice. My phone has no reception at the hospital so not sure I will even take it as there are no safe places to leave belongings. Will take some knitting along to calm the nerves

  • Hi Monika.
M&S make post surgery bras if you need any more, no wires and they have wider sides l find them soft and comfortable l have worn them for years. They take the VAT off !    Don't take valuable items like your purse or handbag even though there are lockers for your clothes.

A bag big enough for your clothes is helpful The nurses will let your lift  know when you are ready to go home.
Do ask the surgeon anything about your operation before the procedure as they will be busy operating afterwards and are not usually available post op.

    take care
