Immunotherapy after radical nephrectomy

Hi all been offered immunotherapy as the docs want to make sure the cancer doesn't come back my tumor was a grade 4 intermediate and they say the cancer has a 30% chance of coming back, I've read the therapy can reduce this to 20 but I'm worried about the side effects and thinking is it worth it I'm 42 yrs old just wondering is anyone taking pembrolizumab and how do they feel thanks in advance

  • Hi Colin,

Think it thru, you have a choice here.

Option 1: traipse along to the hospital every 3 weeks for a couple of years and know, with no guarantees, that you did everything you could to beat this disease.

Option 2: skip the immunotherapy, maybe have cancer come back, and spend your last months wondering if you might have survived with treatment.

Your call. For what it's worth, I went from stage 4 lung with a brain tumour down to stage 1 after brain surgery and pembrolizumab. From that to cancer-free after a lung lobectomy. Couldn't have done that without immunotherapy - I'd be pushing up daisies by now.

    kind regards,
    Steve

  • Hi Steve thanks for your reply it's the side effects that I'm worried about but as you say if this can help I would be crazy not to consider it thanks very much.

  • Hi Colin

I was diagnosed with stage IIIB melanoma last October and had a complete groin dissection which has had some life changing after effects (seroma, lymphedema etc).  I was also offered immunotherapy with the same drug as you have been offered, every 6 weeks for a year initially.   I have only had one round of treatment but have had no side effects so far.  The stats are excellent for skin cancer and so it was a no brainer for me, even if it gave me 5 years, that was better than the alternative.  I am due to have my second round next Friday and so am happy to let you know how I feel after that.  The actual treatment only takes 30 minutes once you are set up and I drove home with no ill effects at all.

  • Hi Katie thanks for the reply and hope you're well, if you could that would be great they want to offer me that drug plus a new one but the tumor and kidney has been removed and they say I'm cancer free at the moment but there's a 30% chance of it coming back so that's why I'm getting offered it, most cases have metastases or tumors that's confusing me too I've got an appointment next week so I'll get these questions wrote down thanks for your time.
