Hickman Line

Hi everyone

I had my Hickman line fitted 2 weeks ago and I am really struggling.
How do you sleep with it? I am normally a side sleeper and cannot get comfy on My side without feeling super aware of the line or the dressing. They have secured it all really well which is great I'm just feeling pretty miserable with it.

I've had my first treatment (second had a be abandoned as I developed a temperature after they started it and then my line had some pus so they think it's got an infection at the exit site so no chemo this week, just antibiotics). I feel like I should be used to it by now by it is still uncomfortable - I understand that it is probably painful right now becuase of the infection but it's just so frustrating.

would appreciate any advice on living with a Hickman line and if anyone has had experience of it getting infected?

  • Hello Scaredmum11

I'm sorry to hear that you're feeling so down at the moment. It's understandable that if you're not sleeping and are dealing with a possible infection you're struggling at the moment.

Hopefully, if we've any members here who have had a Hickman line for treatment they will share their advice and tips for managing it. In the meantime, do talk to your specialist nurse about how you're feeling for some advice, particularly in managing the pain aspect of things. Alternatively, if you'd like to chat things through with one of our nurses you're most welcome to give them a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm. I'm sure they'll be happy to offer any advice and support they can.

I hope that things settle for you soon. Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
    Jenn
