Can I take Sage for night sweats on Letrozole?

Since being on letrozole, I haven't slept due to severe night sweats,  I have to change in the night it is that bad and lay on a towel.

Can I take sage leaf to help or will that promote estrogen production, which will defeat the object of Letrozole?

    Hi Carole,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear about your night sweats. I can fully appreciate what you are going through. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 3 years. I initially had a lumpectomy, followed by Tamoxifen. The following  year, I had a second bout. This time I had a double mastectomy, followed by Letrozole for 6 and a half years. I suffered badly with night sweats. My nurse suggested sticking to a brand of the medication, which gave me the least side effects - there can be quite a difference from one manufacturer to another. She also suggested taking the tablet at night, instead of in the morning. This didn't work for me, so I was then prescribed Clonidene.

I am a trained Homoeopath and had been taking quite a lot of Homoeopathic and Alternative therapies prior to my diagnosis. I was advised by my consultant to stop them immediately, as some of them can alter the effectiveness of the hormone therapy. It would be best for you to speak to your breast care nurse before you try sage, just to make sure that she is happy for you to take it.

I do hope that you find something to help.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Carole

Following my breast surgery in 2018 I was prescribed Letrozole and had a dreadful time of it like you  with hot flushes galore and terrible night sweats which meant many disburbed nights sleep. I struggled on with it for almost 18 months simply because I thought I should try to live with it. What a mistake! When I finally couldn't take it any more I reported it to my Breat Care Nurse who then discussed it with my consultant surgeon and put me on Exemestane instead - and what a difference! I can't believe that I thought I just had to put up with it. So my advice to you would be to report it asap and discuss a change of medication, as you certainly don't need to suffer these awful side effects from Letrozole. Hope this helps.
