Wide local excision

Hello - new to this forum.

I have had a wide local excision on my thumb (removal at the Metacarpophalangeal Joint) due to a malignant melanoma caused by trauma to the thumb. I was advised not to drive for 3 to 4 weeks post operation and the inference was that it would be OK to drive once I was comfortable. As I beleive the top section of my thumb is not required for control of a car do I still require a letter from my consultant to say I am safe to drive?

I will be asking my consultant to confirm but wondered if anyone else had any similar experience?

Thankyou in advance

  • Hello Indigo_Foxtrot and welcome to the Cancer Chat forum.

Unfortunately I can't answer this question, but our cancer nurses may be able to help so if you'd like to speak with them about this, you can give them a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very knowledgeable and will do all they can to help.

Hopefully some of our members will share their experiences and advice with you soon as well but in the meantime, I hope your recovery is going well and that your consultant can give you confirmation about the letter when you next speak.

    All the best,
