Low stocks of medicines in area - what do we do now!

Hi there. I don't know what to do? My lovely Mum in law has a return of her womb cancer and is palliative. However, could live well with it if treatment works. We got her the megastrol tablets as prescribed and she feels more positive, feels like they are doing something. But now we are down to the last tablet and despite chasing up the clinicians, go, 9 pharmacies we can't fill her prescription for at least a month. No one is helping us! I feel helpless and after a chat with Mum in last yesterday I know she feels worthless and let down. She feels that she's going to die now. What can I do, is there an alternative. She not 70 yet.

  • Hello C.Heal

I'm so sorry to hear that your Mum is struggling to fill her prescription and that despite chasing the clinicians and GP she's no further forwards. It's understandable that she's feeling let down by things.

If you've still not been able to speak to her hospital team, please get in touch with the PALS team and ask for their support. Their role is to help resolve concerns or problems when you're using the NHS.

If you manage to speak to the Consultant team then it's worth asking if the hospital pharmacy is able to fill this prescription as a one-off while your Mum is having problems sourcing the medication. However, it's possible that the team would have to write a new script for this. Alternatively, they may be able to prescribe something else in the short term.

If you'd like to chat things through with one of our nurses they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

I really do hope that your Mum is able to get this sorted.

    Best wishes,
