Post neck dissection & thyroidectomy - struggling

Hi all,

Was diagnosed with Papillary thyroid carcinoma. Last week I had my thyroid removed alongside central neck dissection and right neck dissection. Over 40 lymph nodes were also removed. I stayed in hospital for 7 days as my calcium levels dropped dangerously so was under observation.

most nerves were preserved, I have right vocal chord palsy but still grateful I can talk. My right side of my face has not restored yet a week later I am swollen, my lips are not symmetrical when talking. Under my jaw I don't have a jawline just lots of swelling, chest wall pain under shoulder almost like a sensitivity to cold. I seem to have developed horners syndrome with a droopy eyelid on the operated side.

im grateful to have had this surgery etc and I am not moaning but I am really struggling with the change in my facial appearance. The lack of mobility and the pain I anticipated. I'm struggling with that too but I have no choice but to try my best to physically manage. Docs and nurses advising to hang in there saying the facial change is 'normal' which granted for them seeing it daily it is but for me it isn't. I'm almost losing hope. I'm 30 and newly married and although it isn't vanity I feel like my identity has been stripped away with a very different looking face. I know it's just been a week but I guess I'm searching for any reassurance through experience etc.

Does it really get better?

  • Hello SJ92

I'm sorry to hear about all that you've been through over the past few months, in particular, how much you're struggling since your surgery last week. I think your feelings are very valid and it's understandable that you're struggling with the current changes to your appearance.

It is still very much early days in the recovery process. I know that doesn't necessarily make it any easier to bare but the swelling will settle over time and as things improve, hopefully, you'll feel happier with the way your face now looks.

Please talk to your spouse about the way you're feeling. I'm sure that they will want to do all they can to support and reassure you through this phase of your recovery.

I wanted to also give you the link to an organisation called Changing Faces. They have lots of information and support available to those whose facial appearance has changed due to cancer treatment including a specific online community, peer group sessions, and counselling & well-being support. Hopefully you'll be able to connect with others who have been through similar experiences and find the support that you need.

They say time is a healer. Yes, that's a cliche but it's also true. Be kind to yourself SJ92. Take things a day at a time. Lean on those around you for support but also continue to reach out to access support from others who have lived similar journeys.

I hope that things begin to improve for you soon.

    Best wishes,
    Jenn
