Surgical Drain Removal

Hi

I am just after a bit of advice really. I had a lumpectomy and full lymph node clearance on the left breast on Monday this week. I have a surgical drain in place at the moment which is due to be removed on Monday next week. I am really worried about having the drain removed, I just don't know what to expect. Is it painful/uncomfortable? I know I have to have it removed regardless it's just fear of the unknown and I'm stressing about it. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks. x

  • Hi, I had the same surgery as you and the drain removal wasn't painful, just a little uncomfortable as there was a slight tugging feeling. I took a couple of paracetamol beforehand which might have helped. My drain ended up staying in for 9 days so don't worry if yours stays in a bit longer, they wait until.the daily fluid loss has reduced to a certain level. Hope that the rest of your treatment goes well x.

  • Hi

Thank you for your message. That's good to know that is no too bad. It was really worrying me. I was hoping to have it removed sometime over the weekend but it hasn't happened yet so I guess I'll have to be patient. Hope everything is going well with your treatment. Thanks again for your reply.

  • Hi, I had a similar surgery to you. I found it quite uncomfortable when it was removed. It stung quite a bit. The feeling did subside after a while though.

I wish I'd taken paracetamol before having it done.

  • Hi

Oh, that's what I was worried about. After doing 16 weeks of chemo, having cannulas put in, which I hated, and going through surgery you'd think I'd be used to a bit of pain and discomfort but it doesn't get any easier. I'll definitely be taking painkillers before it's removed!!

    Thanks for letting me know.
