Acid reflux question

In short had operation 10yrs ago and lots of problems since. The one I have now however is the worst. Every month or so I get this noxious sticky phlegm/ sputum coming up at night, it burns so much it feels like acid in my throat. Although I could live with it if it passed quickly it stays for hours sometimes 16 hrs. I cough it up every so often and it is so sticky i literally can not wash it off I have to scrape it with a knife, it is a mustard colour. It obviously keeps me up and also makes me feel suicidal as I can't get rid of it and it burns constantly. Have seen many doctors none able to help, tried every medication none of any use. I can't understand why it comes and goes and has no obvious pattern. Tried to see if it was dietary but diet does not appear to matter. Anyone had similar and found a solution, paul

  • Hello Paul and a warm welcome to Cancer Chat,

Poor you it sounds really difficult to have to deal with this every month and 16 hours is a long time to have to put up with this. It seems to be having an impact on how you are feeling which is totally understandable but if you are feeling really low, especially when it keeps you up at night and you want to talk to someone don't hesitate to get in touch with Samaritans and you can call them at any time of day and night on 116 123.

I am so sorry that despite talking to different doctors about this, no one has been able to help you yet. It's very strange that it comes and goes and has no obvious trigger or pattern but the burning sensation you describe does sound rather unpleasant.

I am not sure what operation you had 10 years ago but perhaps it would be a good idea to try and get in touch with the medical team that carried out the operation at the time or see if you could talk to your specialist at the time as they may be aware of this potential side effect and know how best to deal with it? I really hope you manage to talk to someone about this soon and that you can sort this problem or at least alleviate it.

Our cancer nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 if you would like to talk to them about anything -  their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope that you will hear from others here who have had a similar issue before and that they will come and share their story with you.

    Best wishes,
