Has anyone had to undergo re-excision due to margins?

Hi ladies, have any of you, like myself, had to undergo re-excision following lab results showing margins are unclear or positive ? My results have been delayed by another week, again, second operation 20th October, it was the same following my first operation 22nd September, the waiting is causing me severe anxiety and upset. I'm worried i may need a third operation

  • Hi

Not sure if your talking about Breast Cancer or not but yes I had a second Surgery to get Margins clear, my nurse said you can go back three times if needed. It was okay and I didn't hv any pain like the first time

    kind Regards xxx

  • Hi, sorry, i didn't make myself very clear did i yes for breast cancer, invasive ductal with lobular features. I am dreading the possibility of having to undergo a third operation, although my second operation wasn't as painful in the armpit as the first following sentinel node removal, i ended up on antibiotics both times and after the second op there was a build up of fluid under the site of the wound, this in itself was very painful. I just want my results and move on to the next stage of treatment. It just seems never ending and i need to get back to work.

    Kind regards

    Xx

    Hi Barkell,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am so sorry to hear that you still haven't achieved a clear margin. This is a fairly common occurrence. I had a lumpectomy 13 years ago. At the time my surgeon told me that the pathology results stated that I hadn't got clear margins. However, he assured me that he had realised that at the time and, had taken more away after that, so that he was confident that I was clear and wouldn't need any further surgery. I was not convinced of this. Six months later, I discovered a lump in my other breast. Fortunately, this was clear on biopsy. Almost a year to the day of my original surgery, I discovered a second lump in my original breast.

This time it was cancerous and I ended up having a double mastectomy, as the surgeon felt that the lump in my other breast could have been pre-cancerous. I had seromas too (fluid under the site of the wound) and got great relief when these were drained a few times.

I know that it seems never-ending just now, but stick with it. You want to get things settled once and for all. It is easier doing this now, than having to come back again at a later date.

Waiting for results is always a worrying time - here's hoping that you don't need a third op. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine, thank you for your reply. I am so sorry to hear you have been through such traumatic times. I know this may sound a bit odd, but i wish i had been offered a mastectomy, i even asked for one but was told with a cancer as small as mine it wasn't necessary ! Well to be honest i don't consider a breast cancer that has gone from 10mm to 22mm, which didn't show up on mammograms, biopsies and MRI scans to be small.

My train of thought was take the whole thing from there, but i suppose they know best.

Praying for good results on Monday and to be able to move on to radiotherapy and i sincerely hope you can move forward in your life with no more worries of a recurrence.

The waiting and worrying is indescribable isn't it.

Take care and look after yourself, and thank you again for your reply,

    Barkell

    Hi Barkell,

I must confess that I was quite relieved when my surgeon concurred with my suggestion to do the double mastectomy. I have felt much more reassured since this was done, than I did after my lumpectomy. Most surgeons are reluctant to remove a viable breast, which is probably why your surgeon doesn't want to.

The waiting and worrying is absolutely horrendous and, I'm glad that you don't have long to wait.

Do please let us know how you get on on Monday - here's hoping that you can move on to the next stage. Remember that we are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi,

I will let you know and thank you for your kind words.

Boobs, in my humble opinion, are neither use nor ornament when they go wrong !

  • I have now had 3 surgeries in 8 weeks for a bid for clear margins. I find out Wednesday of the 3rd one was successful. However, they did state to me that it was rare and my situation was that they had cleared my tissue margined the second time around but my cancer had spread  into my skin which is rare.

It's been so so difficult stuck on the surgical hamster wheel awaiting results but I keep telling myself that the most effective way of getting rid of cancer is surgery. Happy to have a chat if you want to inbox me lovely. Xxx

  • Wow, 3 surgeries in 8 weeks, you have certainly been on that surgical hamster wheel.

I hope you are now completely clear of the dreaded C, both in your breasts and skin and can move forward with whatever future treatment is best for you.

Thank you so much for replying, it's not until you go through this yourself that you realise there are so many others also going through such difficult times.

  • I find out this Wednesday darling if I am. Already dreading the news!! It's hard because recovery has been hindered and delays have been put on to chemo etc. just when I start to heal it's surgery again.

Fingers and toes crossed your results are clear! Xx

  • Morning

i had a Lumpectomy and a Sentinel Node Biopsy on 19 October, at my follow up appointment I was told that two of the margins were unclear and that I would have to have a re excision which will happen on 23 November. I have a burn on the affected breast and still in a bit of pain and it feels hard to touch. Nurse was supposed to call but hasn't so far.

Can anyone advise me if it is as sore second time round ? I'd rather be prepared as it's stressful to think they have to operate again.

    Thank you
