Prostate cancer. Alpha reductase inhibitors as treatment?

My dad is waiting for prostate cancer diagnosis (biopsy on weds). His prostate is huge (160g) and is causing significant symptoms (lots of blood and clots and needs catheter). I see Alpha reductase inhibitors can be used to shrink the prostate in benign prostate enlargements. Does anyone have experience of them being used in cancerous cases? They don't want to operate on my dad as he has heart complications so I'm concerned about what other options there are to shrink the prostate. And given the symptoms it would be helpful to act fast to stop it growing further. Thanks

  • Hello NickyBeau,

I hope your dad's biopsy goes ok tomorrow. The specialist will be the best person to speak to about the options available. In the meantime, you can read about biopsies to diagnose prostate cancer here, which I hope will be informative. Whether you're coming to the appointment with your dad or not, it's always handy to write down any questions you have and take them to the appointment. That way all your concerns will be covered.

    Best wishes,
