Yoga with a picc line

Hiya, I'm starting chemo on Thursday..had a picc line put in last week. Im quite active usually, run, swim and practice yoga every day. I know I can't swim and probably won't have the energy to run. But. I love my yoga. And the nurse who inserted my line told me to use my arm normally. That I could do yoga, no deep inversions, but I could do arm balances wich I love. However, everything I read is saying don't over stretch the arm, no repeatative movements and no this that and the other along with no weight on the arm. I get I probably won't have the energy to od amr balances. But I'm even nervous of doing a down dog as it's and inversion, or a warrior two because or stretching my arm out. Oh and a forward fold. I love those.  Not to mention my job, I'm a cleaner, I asked her if it's ok to hoover as it's a repeatative movement and she said yes.

Please could anyone clarify and info for me because I'm already being very cautious with the yoga but I'm missing it before the chemo has even begin.  I realise it's not a huge problem in the grand scheme of things but it is a big part of who I am.

  • Hi,

I just wanted to reply, I had a pic line too, I was so active also. I actually put a bandage over it like those you would use when you had a sprain, tubelar bandage. Check with your nurse but I felt that this protected it enough. You will soon get used too it! I carried on as normal and after time forgot all about it.

I finished my Chemo in April I had 6x FEC-t for Breat Cancer. I wish you all the best with your chemo, it's tough but it is do able, I wrote a diary after my first one, which days I had side effects and what they were, this was I could prepare for the next round. You don't fee unwell for the whole time just the first 7 days or so.

happy to help if you need me.

    love lots

  • Hiya, thank you for replying that's good to know. I have breast cancer too. Having 12 weekly sessions ( can't remember the names of the chemo) then 9 weeks of fec once every 3 weeks.

  • Hi again,

bless you, so glad you having a Pic line in that case, it's so easy, much better that a Canula each time. I assume your having that before surgery? My friend had the same, it's a slog but she got through it! I had surgery first then chemo then Radiotherapy' now on Anastrole and Prostap injections. It went quicker than I thought it would. xx

  • Yes the chemo first, surgery, then radiotherapy. It does sound a bit of a slog doesnt it.  Not sure how I'm going to manage with my four kids. They're slightly older 16,14,11, and 7. Got my husband and my mum but I want to be able to manage some stuff myself.

  • Wow, 4 little helpers, If it's the same as my friend she has found the 12 okay, the Fec is a bit nauseous but it's manageable. I was able to do most things, it was the Fatigue that I struggled with. Drink plenty of fluids, look after yourself and do what your body is telling you.

Take all the help. Sounds like you have a great family.

    best wishes xx

  • Thank you.

Unfortunately my first chemo tomorrow at 10 was 'postponed' by the consultant at 630, this evening..they're waiting for something from cardiology to be sent over. They've had all week to get it and, oh, 630 the evening before she decides to ring and tell me, even though on the portal my appointment is still booked..I'm incadescent with rage.

  • That's not good at all, you probably have got yourself all set and in the Zone, I had only my time changed once and that threw me out completely.

It's not fair, like you say they have had plenty of time. I hope they have re arranged it for you xxx

  • Hello [@Chocolateismyfavourite]‍ !

I have just completed my first chemo for BC and also have a Pic line in.

Not sure what chemo you are on but I have started with EC and it proper knocked me off my feet for a good week afterwards. I found that really upsetting and disheartening to be honest as I considered myself pretty fit pre- diagnosis so just to pre warn you. . I literally couldn't keep my eyes open.

Anyway, after about a week I felt "normal" again and I have been able to get back the gym. I do everything including running and weights - I just don't go crazy with overly heavy weights. I'm sure you will be fine with your yoga. You know your own body so will know what it within reason. It will do absolute wonders for your mental health too which i say is the absolute worst part of this whole journey.

    Good luck x

  • Thank you, yes , exactly, I had.  It's re arranged for Monday morning. Fingers crossed it goes ahead.

  • Thank you for the heads up. I am expecting it to knock me off my feet, it is something beginning with EC and P, together, so a double whammy.  That's the first week wich is Monday now, not today, then it'll just be one of those two the following two weeks, then it'll repeat like that for 12 weeks weekly.  I'm expecting the worse, hoping for a bit better than than though, if I can do a bit of yoga I'll be happy. Just pleased the chemo is going ahead.
