Confused consultant or oncologist ???? HELP

Consultant said chemo but don't oncologist have the last day ??

consultant said she recommended chemo oncologist wasn't in MDT meeting do oncologist follow instructions from consultant ???

any one had this please help

  • When I was diagnosed, I was told by the consultant that I  needed chemo. However, he then said that he couldn't give me any more info than that as the specific info about chemo would be given to me by the oncologist. I then had my appointment with the oncologist 10 days later who told me the exact chemo I would be having, frequency, side effects etc etc. If you are definitely having chemo, you will have an appointment with an oncologist (or a member of their team) x

  • Consultants are part of your team, and that's exactly what that MDT is made up of. Consultants, oncologists, surgeons etc. So the consultant, based on the information they have, will be making an educated statement to yourself. S/he will be well versed because they specialise in that body part themselves. The oncologist is the person who decides the type of drugs and the treatment plan using those drugs.

    I may mix up the oncologist titles, so apologies and feel free to correct, but my wife's team was;

    The consultant

    Medical oncologist (chemo, hormone etc therapy)

    Breast surgeon

    Clinical oncologist (Radiotherapy)

    I purposely omitted the nurses as I'm assuming they have little or no say.

    Everything the consultant told us has played out to the letter.
