Chemo (EC) - any hair care tips?

Hi!

I was diagnosed with breast cancer 3 weeks ago and I am due to start chemo on Sep 6th.

I may be clutching at straws but I would like to attempt to save my hair. I have a thick mane of hair that I am getting chopped into a short bob. I will be attempting the cold cap too.

I am starting with EC chemo and my macmillan nurse has warned that this is the most agressive of my treatment plan and if my hair is going to fall out, it will do so pretty quickly.

I am still prepared to do what it takes to save it though. Does anyone have any hints or tips? Specifics shampoos, hair care tips? Ways to ease the brain freeze from the cold cap?

Just want to add - that I am under no illusions that this may all be in vain but I'm not prepared to brave the shave until I really have to

Thanks in advance xxx

  • Hi sorry to meet you here I'm 38 I finished my Chemo in April for BC I had FEC-T

I had really long think blonde wonderful big hair! I loved it so much.

I used the Cold Cap. I didn't cut mine short but I know people do, get your wig anyway incase

Have a look at the Paxman cold cap website this has all the info you need.
The cold cap is tough but I managed to keep about 60 percent,.

1, ask if you can go for a fitting before your treatment, maybe when you have your first bloods done ( I did and it was good) you have to make sure it's really tight! I had a munk spot on the top where it didn't fit that well the first time

2, I bought Simple shampoo and conditioner this has no added chemicals in it

3, use a wide tooth Comb,

4 take into hospital the Simple conditioner
5 make sure they really wet your hair! From the root to tio and underneath then out lots of conditioner on,

7 take 2 paracetamol one hour before you use the cold cap

8 take a neck pillow like one of those for travelling this helps

9 my nurses gave me heat packs and blankets as it makes you chilly

10 you will need a cotton wide hairband this Needs to go on fore head don't let the cold cap touch your head.

11 put a cotton ball on each temple,

12 take a woolly hat for after you finish

My hair started to grow back before my chemo ended, it came back thick and lush, and really quick! They cold cap stops your folicules being damaged

my lashes and brows where the lady to go but grew back so quick. I only washed my hair twice a week

so With the chemo, I had heartburn so I had gaviscon and Renee tablets

they gave me a mouth wash for my mouth only used it a week after each cycle

    i used baby toothpaste

    lipsalve

They should give you moistueising cream

paint your nails black! This stops them falling off

    satin pillowcase

drink lots of water the day before, drink four pints a day for the first four days
Just want to say that side effects only last a week after chemo then you start to feel better before your next one. You don't get them all side effects

I had a pic line, it was a bit annoying some times but it was great, mainly because I had to get it checked once a week so I could Speak to the nurse.

You can ask your team any time if you have side-effects they will work with you to make sure that you can get through it. I hope I've helped and it goes really quickly. I hope the cold cap goes well, Make sure you tell them you want to do it so that they have a machine for you. Take good care of yourself whilst you're having chemo eat plenty of fruit

I hope this helps. Love Sarah

  • Hi [@snow-drop]‍, I'm just browsing for posts about EC-T and so happy to have landed on your reply to [@story78]‍ Thank you so much for sharing your tips. I won't be using the cold cap as I suffer terribly with migraines and headaches, but will definitely refer to the rest when my treatment starts, hopefully in the next couple of weeks. I'm so pleased you have a beautiful head of hair again! [@story78]‍ i really hope the cold cap works for you and that your treatment goes as well as it can and has the desired effect. I'll be a week or two behind you hopefully. How many cycles of EC are you having? Then T? Praying for you both on your journeys. Love, Amy xx

  • [@snow-drop]‍ Wow! Thank you so much for your reply. I will definitely be taking all your advice on board. Glad to hear you are doing well!

Hi [@Amy321]‍ , nice to meet you - although I wish under better circumstances. I have 4 cycles of EC every 3 weeks and then 12 weekly cycles of paclitaxel. Also I will be have a target chemo simultaneously of Trastuzumab and pertuxumab. Following that, surgery. My oncologist is very positive and says they "aim to cure" so I'm just focusing on that. Hope you are ok? It's a definite rollercoaster isn't it. I got the last of my results on Friday so I feel like i can breathe a bit now x
