Tinnitus after Cisplatin chemotherapy

Hi

I had 5 sessions of Cisplatin chemotherapy. Since finishing treatment I have developed tinnitus. It was explained to me beforehand that this was a possible side effect but I was wondering if anyone else developed this during or after treatment? If so was it permanent? Is there anything that I can do to reduce it?

Thanks in advance x

  • Hello haylzz,

It does indeed seem like tinnitus is a known side effect of your Cisplatin treatment. It appears as mentioned on the Cisplatin information page on our website that cisplatin can cause "hearing loss, especially with high pitched sounds" as well as ringing in your ears (tinnitus).

I can imagine this gets a bit annoying! It is advised that you talk to your doctor or nurses if you notice any changes affecting your earing so if you haven't done so already, do talk to your GP about it. I am sure your doctor will have good tips to help you reduce it or to manage the tinnitus.

I hope that you will hear from other members of the forum who have experienced this. I have slightly edited the title of your post to include the words 'cisplatin' so that it can be more easily spotted by others who have had this before whilst undergoing the same treatment. Hopefully you will hear soon from the experiences of others and they may have some good advice to help you with the tinnitus.

I hope this gets resolved or improves very soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Thanks Lucie. I've got a telephone appointment tomorrow with my oncology Dr so I'll definitely mention it to her. X

  • Great idea haylzz, your oncologist is the best person to advise you on this! I hope she will have great suggestions for you. I can imagine this ringing in your ears is getting on your nerves

  • Yes it's like having a telephone next to my ear  ! Luckily it's not constant at the moment so I do get some relief from it. X
