  • Hi K2022

I had the same surgery as you are going to have about 5 weeks ago and I'm recovering really well.
I was in intensive care for 4 days but comfortable and constantly looked after very well. The staff do their utmost to make sure all your needs are met. I did have a feeding tube but didn't really notice it and I wrote notes on a clipboard as I couldn't speak for a few days. As for the tracheotomy tube I didn't really notice that most of the time and the hole is nearly healed up now. You are given plenty of painkillers if you need them. After ICU I was on the ward and gradually learned how to shower myself and went for a few short walks (supervised at first). Eating was just bottled smoothies to start with but the main thing is to be patient and realise that you're recovering from a major operation, so don't rush and overdo it. Rest as much as possible and ask for help as much as you need, especially when you get home where it's harder to take it easy in some ways.I've fallen into the trap of feeling better and doing too much and ended up being really tired and delaying my recovery. Put yourself first- that's really important.
if you are worried about the surgery why not phone your surgeon who will explain everything to you and hopefully put your mind at rest? Remember to ask any questions and make them aware of your worries so they can reassure you.
I hope this helps and everything goes really well for you- let me know how you are doing.
