Menopause after radiotherapy

Hi

I'm currently undergoing radiotherapy and chemotherapy for vulva cancer. I've been told that the pelvic radiotherapy is very likely to bring on early menopause (I'm 37). Has anyone else been through something similar? Did it start quite quickly?

Thanks in advance

  • I hope you dont mind but I am interested to know how you got on as I am in the same position that you were in at the beginning of your story.

I don't know if my chemo/radiotherapy has defunked my lady bits or not,

I am presently in a position nof completing treatment but waiting for first scan so everything has suddenly become very scary again.

  • Hi

Of course I don't mind. I've not had any "official" confirmation that I am in early menopause but I am getting all the signs and symptoms that I am. My periods have never returned, I'm having hot flushes, my skin is dry and itchy and my anxiety is gradually getting worse.

My oncologist said that she would check my bloods before my next appointment with her then refer me onto the Early Menopause clinic (whatever that is...) but she is apparently running a month behind on her appointments so I've not had any contact with her since November last year.

Do you mind ne asking what you are having treatment for? It's always worrying waiting for scan results and it seems to be taking ages for results to come back.

  • I was diagnosed with bowel cancer 22nd December having had symptoms for 3yrs and was fobbed off left right & centre.

Began intensive chemo/radiotherapy on the 1st February and completed it 10th March 2023.

Fingers crossed the treatment has annihilated the near 5cm tumour, failing such a permanent colostomy will be plan B for me.
