Post cancer survivor having periods after covid

I had breast cancer in Oct 2009 - lump removed and 4 lymph nodes removed, had 6 lots of chemo, 25 lots of radiotherapy, 18 lots of herceptin and 10 years of tamoxifen - which finished in 2020.  I am now 53 and since taking tamoxifen, my periods stopped and I probably had about 4 in the last 10 years.  I contracted covid 2 weeks ago and had a week off sick from work and then I started a period which I thought was weird as I don't normally have them.  I am now on day 10 of my period and it doesn't seem to be stopping.  It's not that heavy but it's still there and I am quite concerned now as this isn't normal and I don't know whether to phone a doctor on Monday as it's now Saturday.  I have researched about periods and covid and it seems there are quite a few women who have had longer periods but I don't know if they have gone through breast cancer!  Has anyone got any advise?

  • Hello Missy2078 and a big welcome to Cancer Chat,

I hope you've recovered well from covid. It's strange that right after getting covid you started a period when you don't usually have them anymore and that you are now on day 10 and it doesn't seem to be stopping. As this is a new occurrence, I would definitely ring the doctor tomorrow. Make sure you mention that this started after you had covid but also mention your medical history and the fact that you had breast cancer in 2009 as this is something they will also want to know.

I hope you will hear from others on the forum who have been in a similar situation and that they will come and share their story with you.

Fingers crossed you manage to speak to a doctor tomorrow and get some advice on this.

    Best wishes,
