Tongue cancer - struggling with strength post op

Hi

I had my operation on 14th march to remove cancer from the tongue had lymph nodes removed from neck and left arm skin used to rebuild tongue.

Now got lymphedema in neck which is being manage by myself with help from the lymphedema clinic.

Mentally I feel fine but not got the strength at the moment. Can I ask how long it takes for strength to return I'm hoping to go back to work in August.

Thank you all

  • Hello Winter168.  Each person is different, and it is impossible to give you an answer.  Some people bounce back fairly quickly after going through cancer and their treatment, but others take a very long time to get back to normal, and I have to say that I have known people who, although they have recovered from cancer, they have never truly been the same as they were before, in the sense that their energy levels are nowhere near what they used to be.  My own personal experience was that the first time I had breast cancer and went through the treatment, I was back to my old self almost immediately........in fact, everyone was amazed at how quickly I got my energy back.........I didn't need any rest or recuperation at all.  However, the second time I got breast cancer and went through chemo, it basically knocked me sideways.  I still have enough energy to take care of my husband who is seriously ill, but I am a shadow of my former self.  Sorry I couldn't  give you a more optimistic answer, but I am sure you would rather hear the truth than a load of waffle...........here's wishing that you are one of those lucky ones who get back to normal and can live your life as you did before, take care, Violet, x
