Tongue Cancer Side Effects - Please Help

Hi there,

I was diagnosed with tongue cancer back in Oct 2021. I underwent a hemi glossectomy with neck dissection in Nov 2021 and started radiation in Dec 2021, finishing in Feb 2022.

I am now ~5 months post treatment and am really struggling with side effects, mostly from radiation and was wondering if anyone was going through the same and had any tips or suggestions that helped.

- Is anyone experiencing scab like feelings in the mouth? I constantly feel like I have scabs all all over my tongue, top and bottom, not just on the reconstruction area. If so, did anyone know what helped with this?

- My jaw and gums are constantly aching, even when I am not talking/chewing. Has anyone else had this and found anything that helped?

Thank you so much in advance.

  • Hi tongcsurvivor,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing these side effects. We have an info page on our website which details some expected side effects and provides some advice. In general the best thing of course is to discuss any difficulties with your doctor or specialist.

Hopefully others here will also be along soon, particularly with any relevant experience to share. You can also search the forum (using the button in the blue bar above) for other potentially relevant discussions on the forum.

You are also welcome to give our nurses a call to see if they have any advice on the issues you mention. You can reach them on 0808 800 4040 (Monday-Friday, 9-5).
