Possible recurrence of cervical cancer?

My mum was diagnosed with advanced cervical cancer in October 2000. She underwent daily treatment of radiotherapy and chemotherapy and had two lots of brahytherapy. She was given the all clear in April 2001.

She has since been back for a scan which was a while back and had phone consultations with the hospital.

A few days ago she had vaginal bleeding which was the only symptom of the cancer. She's in her sixties so it's not menstrual bleeding. Now I'm terrified it's cancer again and I just can't think of what else it could be. She is speaking to her consultant next week by telephone. Has anyone else had experience of this?

  • Hello CharlstonMarlston,

It's great to hear that despite being diagnosed with advanced cervical cancer 22 years ago, your mum was given the all clear and has been doing so well since.

She is definitely doing the right thing in speaking to her consultant next week about this vaginal bleeding and I hope that they will investigate this and make sure it is not related to her initial diagnosis of cervical cancer. There are lots of other things it could be so try not to worry too much until you get the full picture of what is going on.

Keeping everything crossed for your mum that it all turns out to be nothing of concern

    Best wishes,

  • Hello,

I had cervical cancer in 2012. Since then I've had vaginal bleeding twice. Both times everything checked out ok, I think it had something to do with the lining of the vagina being thin, skin is fragile after so much radiation. Try not to imagine the worst, it could be something like I experienced. Tell your mum I'm thinking of her and wish her the best.

  • Good morning Lucie,

Many thanks for your kind reassurance.

I meant to say she was diagnosed in 2020, not 2000!

She has her telephone consultation today with her consultant so keeping everything crossed.

    Thanks again :)

  • Good morning Laura,

Many thanks for your kind reply.

Your words are so reassuring that it might not neccessarily be a recurrence, which really puts my mind at ease. That would make sense re the bleeding and lining being thin!

I will certainly let my mum know you're thinking of her xxx

  • My mum spoke to a consultant and they're going to invite her in for an MRI scan to see if everything is ok but they explained that sometimes remnants of blood or something else. It's just a waiting game now.

  • Hi,

Good to know she is following up as she should. I also had a couple of CT scans and a PET scan after my treatment ended, just to make sure. I tried to look at it as a good thing, that if it was something, I could get it taken care of immediately. If it wasn't, I could move on. Let me know how things go.

  • Hello Laura,

Thanks so much for your message. My mum is being seen in a few weeks. I'm terrified the cancer is back and keep having a little cry. My mum says there's no point worrying before we know though, which is very true.
