Living with blood clots - advice please

Hi everyone,

I'd like to know if anyone else has had a similar experience as my husband since going through cancer treatment.

Brief history: he was diagnosed with ALK- lymphoma 3 years ago and had 2 stem cell transplants, various chemo and DLI to hopefully eradicate it.

In september of last year he was diagnosed with a blood clot in his leg. Due to various issues, he wasn't managed properly in the beginning and then was put on deltaprain injections for the next 6 months, before review by a clotting team. Since then, though his leg swelling and colouration has improved, his leg periodically re-inflates, preventing him from walking properly (usually after long walks). Last month he was diagnosed with a small blood clot in his lung. The clotting team has just spoken to him and recommended he stay on the injections for life! Stating there is nothing they can do to help him.

Has anyone else been through this or something similar? Or have any advice?

Theyve not even investigated his leg to fully understand the situation and they said his injections don't prevent clots, which is what he was told previously.

ANy advice greatly appreciated. It feels like because he's not dying they don't care about him or his quality of life.

Thanks,

Holly

  • Hello Holly

I'm so sorry to hear about the ongoing problems that your husband is living with. It sounds like a difficult and worrying situation for you both.

I'm unsure if we have any members here who have had issues with blood clots post-treatment but hopefully if we do they will reply to share their experiences with you.

It's sad to hear that these issues weren't well managed from the beginning. If you feel that your husband isn't having the input and/or care that you would expect then do consider getting in touch with the hospital PALS team. One of their roles is to help resolve concerns or problems when you're using the NHS.

I do hope that you're able to get the support you both need and that things improve soon.

    Best wishes,
