My Dad is going to die soon.

Hi all.

My name is Heather and I am 14. I am currently struggling very badly as I know my dad is going to die soon. He was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in 2018, about 2 weeks after he was diagnosed with bowel cancer as a whole. It has now spread to his lungs and liver. They told him that there are no other surgeries, operation or ablations that they can do anymore as it won't extend his life expectancy. Everyday is a struggle for me as I just don't know what's going to happen. They haven't said that he is going to die or given him any sort of life expectancy (not that I know of) but they're putting him back on chemotherapy starting from now. It would mean a lot to find some people who can relate in any way, especially people who are my age too. But I know that's a lot to ask for, any support is my hot appreciated.

Thank you so much!
Lots of love from Heather. :) <3 !!

  • Hi Heather

I'm so sorry to hear about your dad being unwell. I'm sure you know there is no cure for stage 4 cancer but chemo is given to shrink and control the cancer. It doesn't mean your dad is going to die any time soon. I really hope chemo works very well for him and keeps him around for a long time yet.

Have you got other family members around who you can talk to? It might also help for you to speak to a counsellor, perhaps your school have one? It can be easier to speak to a stranger sometimes or someone separate from the situation.

My mum had breast cancer in 2013 and sadly, we found out recently that it has come back and is now in her stomach and lungs. I find this absolutely terrifying and I'm 32, I can't imagine how scary it must be at your age and my heart really does go out to you. My mum is starting chemo tablets next Thursday and I am trying to keep positive that they get her cancer under control.

I am always happy to talk to you and I'm sure lots of others on here will be too but it really would be great if you could open up to other family/friends and I really think a counsellor would help xxx

  • My heart goes out to you. There are support resources here. Also speak to your teachers as you can often get some help at school. www.cancerresearchuk.org/.../support-for-children-whose-parents-have-cancer
