Capecitabine and chest infections. Has anyone else had this?

Hi all.

Wonder if anyone on oral chemo has had as many chest infections as me while on meds?

Ive been on oral chemo for 5 months and in that time ive had 4 chest infections and 6 heavy colds. I appreciate my ability to fight infection is reduced but the amount I'm ill seems ridiculous. It's every few weeks.

The infections hit me when I'm off tablets for a week. I've been hospitalised 3 times due to low white cell counts and chest infections.

Would be glad to hear your experiences.

Love to all. Keep fighting x

  • Hello Matron and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm so sorry to hear of all the chest infections and colds you've had to contend with since starting this chemo. It sounds like you've had a very tough time.

As you'll see on our website, 'low levels of white blood cells in your blood which can increase your risk of getting an infection' is an occasional side effect of Capecitabine but it seems that you've been rather unlucky with how often this has occured.

Hopefully some of our members who have had similar experiences with Capecitabine or other types of oral chemo will share their experiences with you soon but if you'd like to discuss this with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

I really hope you don't experience too many more chest infections whilst having this chemo and that all goes well with the rest of your treatment.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
