Worried - not sure whether to have transplant or not

Hi my name is Gary.   I'm 66 just 18th Dec.   I am now in full remission after a full year of chemotherapy treatment.  I should have been in hospital now having stem cell transplant but when I went into full remission it threw a spanner in the works.   The Doctors have had a meeting about me and out of 3 doctors, 2 think I should still have transplant and 1 thinks I should wait to see, am I still in remission after nxt bone marrow biopsy.
The doctors who think I should have transplant are looking at my blood before it exploded into full blown Leukaemia and think there is 1 in 2 chance of it returning.
I absolutely don't know what to choose as I feel so well and the transplant is a risk in itself.
I would be interested in any feedback that comes back and thank you in advance     Gary

  • Hi Gagsy,

I can understand this must be a difficult decision and lots of things to weigh up. I must admit I don't have the required knowledge of the risks involved in the transplant, nor the factors involved in the doctors' opinions relating to your care and history. So, hopefully others here with similar experience or other general advice will be along soon.

I'm not sure if you will have further opportunities to discuss your options with your doctor - if so, this may be helpful in terms of answering some questions and getting some further insight into the pros and cons.

If you feel you'd like to talk things through with someone in the meantime, our nurses are available on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5, excluding holidays (they are closed tomorrow, Christmas Eve, until the 29th).

    Wishing you all the best,
