Oesophageal cancer

Hi new to all this My husband was diagnosed on 23/10 with this cancer had his first appointment on Friday 19/11 to be told the cancer is advanced, it is T3 N1 M1 I asked if stage 4 was told I don't use those stagings. It is in his lymph nodes, bones and possibly lungs as had shown markers on his pet scan. Told not curable and not suitable for an op as would spread to quick if they operated. Had a stent today and is quite poorly vomiting brown liquid but won't go back to the hospital believe me I've tried. Next step a meeting with oncologist, is my husbands cancer stage 4 ? And will chemo be given only as palliative care? I don't know who to ask thank you if you read this and can help with any answers x

    Hi Ang36,

    Firstly I'm sorry to hear that your husband has been diagnosed with Oesophageal Cancer. There are a group of us on another thread under Oesophageal cancer  Diagnosis RayB. Most on this thread have or are having the operation including some who were initially told that it was inoperable. The operation is very big and is dependent on a lot of factors.

    None of us are medics and everyone is unique. What I would suggest is that you or your husband speak to the upper GI team. You should be allocated a specialist nurse/team. Also Macmillan nurses are helpful. Also palliative treatment can have significant results in controlling cancer. 

    It is a huge shock and very overwhelming to receive this news. I as they onlooker found it very tough. I hope this helps a little.

    Millie I found you and now I've also found a 'new member' hi ang36.

    As Millie says 'we' are pretty much on another bored and belive it or not, there are quite a few of us- I thought at the beginning that we were the only ones!!! 
    I am a 'watcher' my then 56yr old husband diagnosed out of the blue in July 2020.

    There are a few and were a few on the bored - they are still around don't worry, they have just moved on/ elsewhere. One guy was diagnosed as a stage 4 with mets, his wife was posting- told palliative chemo after 8 cycles the dude was found to be 'visable  disease free' ! 
    you are at the very worst part at the moment, the shock , disbelief, anger, tears, explosions of human emotions every minute of the day! It does get 'slightly' better once a plan is in place

    Please don't think 'palliative care' means 'end game' it doesn't- it means treatment of chronic disease . and as Millie said, some on the board who weren't operable became operable after chemo. So keep asking away.

    i might be speaking out of turn here, but some guys are not very 'compliant' patients!!! LOL. You could even try dragging your husband back to the hospital, but he will leg it again!. As Millie said non of us are medics, but that 'brown gunge' may well be post procedure muck that is coming up- try ringing the unit where he had it done. DON't look on google (we all do though) it is an absolute horror show.
