1am but head melted

Hi , I went for a routine breastcheck mammogram,  I live in Ireland,  and two biopsies  later, both cancerous, I have invasive Lobular  Cancer. Having Mastectomy with Diep Flap a week today. In my head I want to be back at my desk before Christmas even for a just a few hours,  but don't know if I am mad in head thinking this. Christmas is my most favourite time of year and am going to have decorations up before I go in. I read about drains and compression girdles and feel as if I havent a clue what ahead of me. They don't  think it in lymph nodes but taking some out to do tests on. Know will be on hormone therapy and having had menapause at 40 the thought of it all again is not something I relish as it was tough. The last couple of years I fellt good and my sex life with hubby is great...hate the thought of that changing. Know getting cancer sorted is main thing but so many things going through head..Have plenty of help and  support including two adult children who have been great, but am s.d o out of my depth here.

  • Hello Hollu1967

I'm sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis of breast cancer and all that you're now facing. It's understandable that you're feeling out of your depth. It's a lot to get your head around. It's great to hear that you have such good support from your husband and children. That will certainly stand you in good stead over the coming weeks and months.

I'm unsure if we have any members here who have had a DIEP reconstruction. Hopefully, if we do then they will post to share their words of advice and support with you. I do know that a DIEP is a fairly major surgery involving a long and complex operation. It will take time for you to be able to return to some normal activities of daily living such as driving, lifting, etc. It may be a little ambitious to expect to be back at work before Christmas but I'd say take things a day at a time. Don't push yourself and just see how you feel. Listen to the advice that your Consultant gives you.

In terms of the hormone medication that you'll be taking, side effects do impact women to varying degrees and it's possible that you may not have to deal with some of the things you're dreading. But if you do find that you have problems then speak to your GP and/or Breast Care Nurse who will be able to help with advice and support to help manage these. I'd also really encourage you to talk to your husband about your concerns. From your post, I suspect that he will be very supportive and reassuring.

I know that what you're facing is a lot to deal with. Try not to think too far ahead. Just take things one step at a time. Chat to your specialist nurse or Consultant. They are there to help and I'm sure that they will be able to let you know about other support options that may be available in your area.

I hope that all goes well for you next week Hollu1967. I'll be sending positive thoughts across the Irish Sea to you next Monday. Let us know how you're doing when you feel able to.

    Best wishes,
    Jenn
