Use of a Metal Marker for Breast Biopsy

Hello,

Please could you let me know if you have been given a metal marker during your breast biospy and if you know why the Radiologist doing your ultrasound would have chosen this type of biospy instead of a needle?

I had one inserted into my right breast and I feel a small sharp dull pain in that area now after having it for a week.

Does this mean they think surgery will be required and does it mean you are more likely to receive bad news?

Feeling quite anxious waiting on my results, thank you.

  • Hi KB 18,

Putting in metal markers is a routine procedure. This helps your care team to be able to identify the problem area and to compare it to any future scans, etc. It is nothing to worry about. If they are not needed, they won't cause any harm.

It is always an anxious time waiting for results and I hope that you get yours soon. Most consultants prefer to give them face-to-face, irrespective of the outcome, but some still rely on the post or communicate via telephone. This has become more common throughout Covid.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

Keeping my fingers crossed for good news.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • I really hope you get your results soon!

My appointment next Monday is by phone between 8.30 and 9.30. The Dr did say that I could have a face-to-face if I wanted but as they are thinking it is a radial scar the appointment could be over the phone. I think she seemed more positive than the previous Dr I saw. I'm still anxious but maybe not quite as much as before, it depends on how I can distract myself really. I spent over 3 hours at the hospital yesterday with mammograms and the biopsy, they lost power to the biopsy computer machine thing half way through which was a bit concerning!

Thinking of you, let me know when you get your results x
