Diagnosed with lung/bone cancer

Hi, I have been told I have lung cancer in both lungs and that it has spread to the breast bone after a CT scan. I now am awaiting a PET scan and broncoscopy to know where we go from here. Doctor said too far advanced for any surgery.

I am carer for my husband, so I am worried about how we will cope going forward. I am also terrified of the broncoscopy, the thought of something going down my throut and me gagging or not being able to breathe, has anyone had this procedure that can reassure me please?

My head is spinning but hoping that joining this community will help me now, and my journey can selp someone else in the future.

  • Hello MollyRedSkirts

I'm sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis of lung cancer. It's obviously a very difficult time for you at the moment and understandable that you're feeling anxious and in a spin about the next steps.

We have some information on our website here about having a bronchoscopy which may hopefully give you some reassurance. Please do speak to your team about your concerns and I'm sure they will do all they can to make sure you're comfortable during the procedure.

It's likely that you will be allocated a clinical nurse specialist at some point. Do talk to them about your home life. Talk to them about your commitments and how you're concerned you'll cope. I'm sure they will be able to offer some advice about the support that may be available to you and your husband during your treatment.

We also have a team of nurses here at Cancer Research UK that you can call to talk with. I'm sure they will be happy to offer any information, advice, and support that they can. If you'd like to speak with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that you don't have to wait too long for your PET scan and bronchoscopy and that the results bring some reassurance about the next steps forwards.

Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
