Advice

Hi just want some advice I had my first smear in January came back I needed to go back in 3 months as they didn't get a result I never went back and finally my nurse caught me one day when I was at the drs and done it there for me that was in July I got my results last month came back HPV and boredline abnormal cells I had a colonoscopy booked within 2 weeks but had to cancel because of Covid I have now got another appointment for Friday but I am unsure to go as I only have boredline cells and after googling it and Seine comments about how people were fine and it take 10-15 years for it to turn cancer I am just wondering I'm I best just leaving it and just waiting till I have another smear next year as I don't see the point in it plus I am going away on holiday on Saturday and don't really want to be in pain or bleeding while I'm on holiday I know this sounds abit pathetic but just looking to see if anyone never went to there colonoscopy and they were fine at there next smear, I also don't like this kind of appointment it takes a lot for me to go for anything like this, I have been getting a lot of cervical pain and discharge and also reallt heavy periods but I have just put my periods down to having PCOS and I just think it's in my head about the pain my friends and family are telling me to go but I'm just wondering if anyone has not been and have been perfectly fine when they have next got there smear

  • Hi Fay1234

Please go to your colposcopy appointment and don’t put it off. You might have someone come along and say they didn’t go and were fine, but everyone’s case is different. It shouldn’t cause pain and will be over quickly. Having had cervical cancer and spoken to many, many women about colposcopies and abnormal cells, I absolutely do not recommend missing it, and especially not on the basis that abnormal cells take years to turn to cancer! I know lots ladies who have had a cancer diagnosis following a colposcopy so don’t rely on what you rea£ on the internet.

A smear test is not 100% reliable as it just takes a sweep of the cervix. The colposcopy takes a much more detailed look and identifies areas of abnormal cells  which may need further investigation. Do not rely on a smear saying you have low grade changes as a reason not to go. You might not see the point in it, but they wouldn’t have called you for an appointment if it wasn’t necessary. The fact that you are having symptoms is another reason to get checked out.

No-one can force you to go, but you should. If you don’t, and wait till next year when things could have progressed and be much worse, you might wish you had just gone and got it over with.

  • I would go to the appointment as they don't call you unless it's necessary, they get to have a really good look and can put your mind to rest if everything is fine . Or start treatment if needed, the staff are really experienced as gynaecology is their specialty    They will help you through the process then you can relax on your holiday, not having to come back and sort out another appointment.

  • Thank you for reply I know I sound stupid with saying not going cause of my holidaying not just that  I just don't want to get there and they have to take biopsy or anything and plus I don't think I have anything wrong so I'm not really worrying about it as I have read loads that have had the same as me and when they have went they have told them everything is fine so and there isn't even boredline cells so just thinking of leaving it I know I should go but I hate these kinds of appointments I didn't even go for my smear till I couldn't make a excuse up and the nurse seen me in the doctors I think I will go I just think I don't want to be wasting anyone's time if it comes back everything is fine

  • Thank you for your reply I know everyone is different I just seen so many post that theres was normal when they went and they had the same result as me just don't want to be wasting time and then I just think if I do go and they want to take biopsy or tell me something then while I'm away I will be worrying weres as now I'm not worried at all because it just came back boredline I'm more bothered about the HPV result just want that to go I think I will go because everyone is telling me to go but just wanted to see if anyone has had tbat result and just waited till they had another smear and was that one fine, just hate these kind of appointments im speaking to my dr tomorrow over it anyway so will see what they say x
