Hemithyroidectomy- awaiting results

Hi there, my name is Karis and I'm 24 years old.

Back in december 2020, my orthodontist discovered a lump on the right side so he referred me to my GP for an ultrasound. I had my first ultrasound in January this year and all was fine. I decided to go for another in June 2020 and again, they said nothing looked suspicious. I decided to go for a third ultrasound and a biopsy just to be 100% sure. And I'm so glad I did, the biopsy picked up some cells which they were not sure of. I was grade U3, thy3. I was told this on the 5th last month and had my surgery on the 28th. I am due to collect my results on Monday with my surgeon. I am hoping it is not cancer but my mind has been going mad!

I just wanted to see what your experiences were and how you dealt with the results.

thank you

  • My situation was a bit different as the biopsy clearly showed thyroid cancer.

To be honest, my consultant was absolutely right when he told me "ah, it's not the worst situation in the world." I mean, obviously, nobody wants any form of cancer, but I have read that if you had to have cancer but could choose which type, thyroid cancer would be the one to choose. The most common forms have nearly 100% survival among younger people (say under 50s) and they rarely use chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Generally, they remove your thyroid and they may do radioiodine treatment, but none of it is really bad.

Basically, I was diagnosed November of 2019, had my operation in January 2020 and was back at work at the start of February 2020. My voice was a bit weak for a couple of months and my neck gets a bit tingly occasionally, but that's about the worst of it. I had radioiodine treatment in May, but that is just swallowing a capsule and is really just annoying.

  • Sorry to hear! I've heard a lot about it being the 'good' cancer and my surgeon said if it is that, then I am in good hands and I'll be alright.

just hoping all is well when I get my results but will remain positive if it's the latter. Thank you for sharing your story!

  • An update- found out it is non invasive cancer. Surgery on left thyroid is most likely but they will be discussing in a meeting. I was sort of expecting this but I'm quite positive about it
