Essential Thrombocythemia

Hi. Glad to have found this discussion. My mum (73) was diagnosed with ET after a year of painful feet and just looking unwell. Thankfully after constant referrals to podiatry a blood test was taken and it was found her platelet count was extremely high. After the initial shock at the mention of cancer we have a lot more information and I'm glad it was found before a stroke or heart attack. Mum was put on aspirin and hydroxycarbamide and getting regular blood checks. She almost immediately looked much better and could go out walking again which was great. Unfortunately after months of feeling great she is now suffering with anxiety and low moods ️  It is very unlike her - she is a very happy upbeat person usually. She reckons she started to feel this way as soon as the chemist gave her a different make of hydroxycarbamide. Has anyone else experienced this ?  I will call her doctor next week but I'd like to hear from people who really understand what living with this is like if I could. I'm trying to help but it's not me it's happening to. Thank you

  • Hi Tmac2204,

I'm sorry to hear of the situation with your mum - my reply here will boost your post so a few more people should see it, and if there are others with similar experience to share then hopefully they'll be along soon. If you haven't already, do also try searching the forum (using the button in the blue bar above) for other potentially relevant discussions.

I hope that you're able to speak to the doctor and that the symptoms you mentioned with your mum can ease soon.

    Wishing you all the best,
