I have had a U3 diagnosis for thyroid cancer after a fine needle biopsy and a second opinion. They are waiting six months and then if another scan is the same they recommend surgery to determine if its cancer.
I had this happen with a lump on my breast 5 years ago. In the end it was benign. I swithered over surgery then but went with it as they said my risk was 70% and that it would be fairly non invasive with minimal scarring. It wasn't. It was a real stress and I've been left with a large scar and painful scar tissue.
Given this I'm very reluctant to do the same for my thyroid. I've decided that I'm only going to have surgery if I'm U4. The doctors say that's an option with frequent scans and fine needle biopsys. The consultant says its an option but not the recommended one.
One of the main reasons they recommend surgery is that the stress of not knowing is damaging in itself. I get that as this is pretty stressful now, but I don't want surgery unless I absolutely have to in order to save my life.
Does anyone else have experience choosing this route? Or have thoughts or suggestions?
