Liver resection looming

My 70 year old husband was diagnosed with rectal cancer in December 2020. He has got through chemo plus chemo radiation this year and the result has been really good. He now needs a liver resection for two small spots on the liver which will be done at a hospital in the Hampshire area. Would be great to hear from anyone who has had this type of surgery and anyone who has had similar surgery at a hospital in this area thank you

  • Hi Mulago and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm really glad to hear of the progress your husband has made on his cancer journey although I'm sorry he now needs a liver resection.

Hopefully some of our members who have had this surgery will be along soon to share their experiences and advice but if you'd like to have a chat with one of our cancer nurses about this, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

Sending your husband our very best wishes for his surgery when the time comes.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • Ah that is so kind of you. I may well give the line a call.

    Hello Mulago,

l had a 60% liver resection. The first seven days following the op were the most painful thing l have ever had to go through, and l had been through plenty previiously.,breaking most of my ribs, shattered arm and leg complete doddle in comparison. Thats the bad news out of the way,my subsequent recovery has been fantastic with absolutely, thats ABSOLUTELY no after effects whatsoever,so my experience of a liver resection has to be completely positive.

l hope your husband enjoys complete success with hopefully an easier immediate post surgery experience,l should also say l am 7 years on from my op,

                                                                                               best wishes,

                                                                                                                        David

  • Ah thank you for replying to my post. Throughout his journey he has planned for the worst scenario, so anything better has been a bonus! He has two small spots close together and close to the surface, we have absolute faith in the surgeon, so fingers crossed he will do well and 7 years post resection woukd indeed be a bonus. Thank you again for your reply, stay safe and keep well
