Losing my much loved Dad

My had was diagnosed with lung cancer 11yrs ago and had surgery to remove part of his lung.  He also has COPD and Emphysema.  About March time I called an ambulance out to him as he had an episode were he fainted and his breathing and colour wasn't good.  From the time in hospital and scans done he has recently discovered he now has cancer on the good lung, partial collapsed lung, lung around the lung, a large bladder tumour also.  He is too risky to operate on and has refused any further treatment.  Last week the doctor confirmed he is in his last year of life and a DNR form was completed.  It then gets worse, my Mum his career caught Covid, which now my Dad has.  Yesterday we discovered it's now Covid Pneumonia,  after hearing him agitated and struggling to breathe he is now on morphine and a driver to assist with breathing and pain.  For the last two days he has hardly eaten or drank and spends most of his day asleep.  He wants to remain at home so my Mum and my sisters are proving the care along with the community nurses and Doctor.  It's heartbreaking to see and I'm just feeling sad and broken.  If cancer isn't bad enough on its own without Covid too.  Any help or advice gladly received.

  • Hello HurtingHeart,

A warm welcome to Cancer Chat. Your story is so sad. How unfortunate that your dad caught covid too and now has to deal with pneumonia on top of everything else he is going through. It truly is heartbreaking and I hope that his pain is under control and that he is receiving good care from the community nurses and doctor.

I hope your mum is ok it is so hard being a carer when someone is very poorly and she is doing an incredible job being by his side and looking after him. It's important though that your mum also takes breaks and recharges her own batteries as she must be feeling exhausted. Our information on caring for the carer contains some helpful tips to help your mum and sisters cope whilst caring for your dad. CarersUK is another useful resource for you to look at and they may have some useful suggestions for you and your family.

We're thinking of you while you are going through this difficult time and wanted you to know that the forum is always there for you to offload anytime you feel the need to. So many other members of our community have also looked after a loved one with cancer and will understand exactly how you are feeling and what you and your family are going through at the moment. I hope they drop by shortly and share their stories with you.

    Best wishes,
