Worried about abnormal results

Hi I've just joined the group and wondered if other people have had positive FIT tests and high Calprotectin levels and found it was something other than cancer?

I've been referred for a colonoscopy and am going out of my mind with worry as my GP said its most probably Cancer with both tests coming back abnormal

Its the stress waiting that is driving me insane

  • Hello podstar1,

This waiting game surely is no fun game and many of our members will relate to how you are feeling having been through this themselves before. I can understand why you are feeling so anxious as your GP was not very reassuring and it's unfortunate that both your tests came back abnormal. However, the only way to know whether it is cancer or not is to have the colonoscopy so try not to think too much about what the GP said and to wait for the results of your colonoscopy.

I hope that you will hear from other members here who have had positive FIT tests and high Calprotectin levels and found that it wasn't cancer. The best thing to do while you are waiting is to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious.

There are some helpful tips on this page to help you cope while waiting for news.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine. Let us know what you find out if you get a chance.

    Best wishes,

  • Thanks for taking time to reply. I got a letter from the specialist today saying my blood stool level was 165 which I understand is high and calprotectin level is 121 which is only slightly high.Luckily my colonoscopy is on Wednesday so I won't have long to wait to find out what's going on. x

  • Hi guys,

I've now had my colonoscopy and 3 adenomas were found and removed, thankfully not cancerous.

I had the procedure without sedation and it really wasnt too bad for anybody worried about getting checked out.

The endoscopist said they were unlikely to have caused bleeding or inflammation as they were small so ive since had repeat tests for calprotectin or bleeding.

The calprotectin has come back normal but the FIT test is still coming back positive/abnormal. The Dr said she doesnt think its anything to worry about so no further action required.

Is this normal or should i press more to find out whats still causing the bleeding as it is obviously causing some anxiety not knowing why its still positive

  • Hi thanks for sharing your story I am going through similar myself. Did you have any symptoms. I am anxious and have a calprotectin level similar to yours and have been having some bleeding and change of bowel habit. Thanks! X

  • Hi, I'm sorry to hear you're going through a similar experience. It was an awful time waiting to have the colonoscopy and then waiting for biopsy results but gladly nothing sinister, just some small adenomas.

I am having another FIT test in a couple of weeks and hopefully it will be back to normal now and the positive was just the colon still healing from the polyp removal.

My symptoms were similar to what you've described with lots of loose stools, have you managed to get a referral for a colonoscopy? It's the only way to find out and ease your fears.

I'll keep my fingers crossed you get a positive outcome.

    Regards Lee .

  • No colonoscopy booked at present, as the doctor says my bleeding is due to a tear. And that at 120 my calprotectin is aparently only borderline. Xx
