prostate cancer operation cancelled four times.

Hi All

Joined today because I guess I'm looking for support......

First saw my GP back in February 2021 due to having urinary problems. Had a PSA test and DRE examination. PSA was returned as low (1.9) but GP concerned about physical prostate. Anyway was referred to Consultant and to cut long story short it turned out to be cancer.  Was told by Consultant Gleason 7 Grade 2.  In the meantime I had decided on removal whatrever.

First date was given 28 June. Covid swab taken few days before planned Op then day before procedure due to take place received a phone call to say cancelled. Was given new date. What followed was three further cancellations. Latest one was supposed  to take place this Tuesday 10 August. That has been cancelled. Four cancellations now. The excuse thay use is lack of Anethetist (each time???).   Getting frustated now. Honestly I've lost trust in the NHS.  Last summer I had a heart attack and spent 10 days in hospital.  It seems if your case is an emergency NHS is fine but planned procedures   leave a lot to be desired.

Anyway I have contacted PALS and they are to investigate ..........I wonder how many cancellations are "allowed" before they have to operate.  I've packed and unpacked my hospital bag numerous times now......Getting a bit fed up!  Anyone else had delays?

Rant over!

  • Welcome to the Cancer Chat community Diggers although I'm so sorry for all the cancellations you've had.

It's completely understandable why you're feeling angry and frustrated but fingers crossed PALS can help and you'll be having your surgery soon.

If you ever want to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m but hopefully some of our members who have been in similar situations will be along soon to offer their support and advice.

    Kind regards,
