I had High Grade DCIS, but are still worried

Hi everyone.   I'm new to this forum and needed some advice.  I had high grade DCIS 5 years ago. I've now completed my 5 yearly mammograms, which gave me a lot of comfort knowing it was still being checked each year. I'm now waiting on my final results and hoping everything comes back clear. The biggest reason I'm stressed is because I won't be able to have a routine mammogram until 3 years. A lot can happen in 3 years, and with my cancer, I couldn't feel any lumps. Do you know if I can still have a mammogram done privately until the 3 years comes around again for my routine mammogram? Sorry if it seems a daft question, but I'm so afraid about it coming back and spreading.

  • Hi hun, you are in the best hands, my sister went through what you are going through. Honestly feel reassured that the hospital know what they are doing, and the answer to your question is yes you can go private to get a mammogram done. My sister was anxious as you are when she was told they were going to do her mammogram every 3 year. She took her self private every year until her next mammogram with the nhs. I think it is the anxiety of not knowing what can happen which is all normal emotions to go through after what you have been through. My prayers are with you and fingers x that your results are all clear.

  • Hi ya,

thank you so much for replying back, it's made me feel so much better. My final 5 year mammogram results came today, and they are all clear!!   I will definitely go private until I'm due for my 3 year mammogram. I think it will definitely stop me stressing, and if anything is picked up at least I've caught it early. Thank you for putting my mind at rest. It's so lovely of you to reply back. Take care and I hope your sister keeps well xx

  • Best wishes to you to hun, try not stressing as much and enjoy yoyr life, i know its easy for me to say but you have been in the clear for 5 years and usually they look for any changes in the first couple of years, you have been in the clear for 5 years and that is a good sign.

You have beat this girl. They would not put you back to 3 years if they didn't think it was safe to do so.

Take yourself on a well deserved holiday and let your hair down, honestly it will get easy. Best wishes and take care of yourself, and congratulations on the all clear

  • Thank you. Your are totally right. I cannot let it take over my life, especially after having clear results again today. I should be glad that I've got through it okay and should be grateful for that. Thanks again for giving me some positive advice, I think it's what I needed.  Take care x
