Risk reducing surgery - double mastectomy & reconstruction

Hello, I'm new to the forum. I hope this post is OK. Little bit of background....I discovered I have inherited the faulty BRCA 1 gene 3.5 years ago after my sister developed breast cancer for the first time at the age of 35. She was given the all clear after chemo and surgery and double mastectomy but unfortunately not all the cells were completely removed and it returned last year and got in to her lymph nodes! She is still going through treatment but is doing OK. I have watched her going through rounds of chemo treatment and the awful physical effects from that but also watched the psychological and emotional effects of this horrible disease and the treatments. I am 42 now and have been told my chance of developing breast cancer is increasing even further with both the faulty gene and my age so I am considering having a double mastectomy and reconstruction. I have had 2 consultations with a surgeon and due to go back next week for a 3rd to potentially decide on a date. I feel this is something I need to do for myself and my family but am also quite scared of something going wrong. I was wondering if anyone else has had the risk reducing surgery and if you would mind sharing with me your experiences?

  • Hi AJS80 and welcome to the Cancer Chat community.

I'm very sorry to read about the journey your sister has been on. It must have been very tough to find out that the cancer had returned but I'm glad things are going well with her treatment and fingers crossed it will be successful in fully removing the cancer this time.

If you use the 'search forum' option in the purple bar above you'll see many of our members have also found out they have the BRCA gene so will understand how difficult it must have been to make this decision and hopefully some of those who have already had this surgery will be along soon to share their experiences and advice.

If you have any questions about your surgery or would just like to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses then do give them a call. They're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and will do all they can to work through your concerns with you and help put your mind at ease.

I hope my reply helps and all goes well at your 3rd appointment next week.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
